When to Consider External Prestressing

Assess load paths, anchorage space and construction access before selecting a scheme.

Project needs

External prestressing can be assessed among strengthening options for existing beams, bridges and industrial floors with revised loads, serviceability concerns or demolition constraints.

Critical conditions

Tendon routes must suit the structural load path. Anchorages and deviators require adequate capacity and access. Long-term corrosion protection, fire protection, inspection and replacement access also matter.

Compare options

Compare external prestressing with other methods using inspection information and existing drawings. Establish design and approval requirements with the responsible project designer.
